Hello to all, my name is Lillian. This blog is an offshoot of another blog that I have run since 2012 but which I decided was not the appropriate place to write about my medical history research. My main area of interest are early female physicians, generally those who graduated in the late 19th or early 20th centuries, but there may be some odd ones out if they catch my interest.

I am currently a premedical student at the College of Staten Island with the intention of entering General Practice. I have previously earned a Bachelor's degree in Spanish Language and Culture from Russell Sage College as well as an MA from the Fashion Institute of Technology in Historic Textile Conservation. It was through studying medical history and reading the associated medical articles that I decided to study medicine myself.

My main research interests are Dr. Anna Tjomsland and Dr. Sara Josephine Baker, both pioneers in their own ways. Dr. Tjomsland was one of the first female physicians to serve in the US Army, doing so during World War 1. I have upcoming academic publications about her, as well as a full-length book. Dr. Sara Josephine Baker was a physician and public health expert who revolutionized children's health care throughout the United States, beginning at the Department of Health of New York City. I have spent thousands of hours on each in an attempt to locate any and all documents pertaining to their lives.

I am a World War 1 living historian, in which context I portray Dr. Anna Tjomsland. Using my skills as a cosplayer and former theatrical costumer, I have made two uniforms for my impression of her. For the purpose of educating the public I have a display that I bring to events that request my presence, where I teach about the fifty-six women physicians who served in the US Army during World War 1. I also have a full-length talk about Dr. Tjomsland that I have given several times to organizations that requested it. I will post upcoming presentations of it here when I know about them. In addition, if you want me to come and give it somewhere in the New York/New Jersey area, please get in contact with me via the information located at the top of this page.

For those interested in the women pictured in the top banner, they are, from left to right, Dr. Barbara Hunt (1958), Dr. Ethel Rice (1920), Dr. Anna Tjomsland (1916), and Dr. Sara Josephine Baker (1922). All images are in the public domain.
